If you are planning to be temporarily away from Cambridge, there are various things you should think about concerning your computer accounts.
- you may not require any access to Cambridge facilities (including your email) during your absence. In that case you should set up a vacation message and unsubscribe from or suspend any mailing lists.
- you may want to read and send mail while you are away
- you may be taking your own machine away from Cambridge and need to reconfigure it to access the Internet from an ISP connection
- you may wish to login to your Cambridge accounts while you are away
- you may wish to transfer files to and from a Cambridge machine. This is no different from transfers within Cambridge except for certain restrictions on standard FTP; these restrictions do not affect Computing Service systems. Note that wherever possible you should use SFTP (Secure FTP) as this will encrypt the connection and prevent your password travelling in plain text, which is easily snoopable, across the network.
- you may wish to access certain web pages that are only available from within the cam domain or to those who can authenticate themselves to the web server using Raven web authentication. If you do not have, or cannot remember, your Raven password, please see the FAQ on How do I get a Raven password?
- you may wish to access facilities that are only available from within the cam domain, including web pages where the ability to use Raven authentication is not available. In this case your computer must appear to be on the Cambridge network, and you will need to use the VPN (Virtual Private Network) service.
