Archiving, backups and file transfer
DSpace
DSpace is a digital repository; a system to store digital information and its descriptive metadata. Its main purpose at Cambridge is to capture and preserve academic and related content and to make it available online.
July 2006 saw the transition of the DSpace@Cambridge project to a fully supported service, with the Computing Service handling technical matters, material ingest and day-to-day operation and the University Library offering metadata and archiving support. This means there is a commitment from the University to maintain DSpace as an institutional repository. The timing of this coincides with a statement from the Research Councils UK confirming their commitment to making the output of publicly funded research accessible to the public as rapidly as possible, and to ensure its preservation and future availability.
Currently, the DSpace repository has multi-terabyte capacity, which is mirrored over multiple sites for resilience. Requests for communities, collections and allocation of space are currently dealt with on a case by case basis.
