Video and audio materials are a very valuable additions to web pages and are a particularly attractive way of extending the reach of seminars, lectures and events. The presentations themselves can be be lengthy and, if the materials become popular and they are made available from your local web server, can make for slow access. In order to help members of the University who wish make such materials available, the Computing Service provides a Streaming Media Service - this serves a number of different helpful functions:
- Hosts collections of your materials, so your web server doesn't need to handle the load. Players for the materials can then be embedded in your web pages.
- Automatically converts audio and video into a number of formats useful for distribution over the Internet, with an option to select formats if you wish. Both higher- and lower-quality and downloadable versions may be provided to serve various audiences.
- provides practical advice and equipment loan for audio or video capture
