Publishing audio and video content

The Streaming Media Service allows registered users to upload video and audio for conversion into user-selected formats suitable for streaming or download. These formatted files are then made available to users from the Streaming Media Service.

You should upload the highest quality video you have available for us to process - we expect very large files - in that way the resulting compressed files will be of the best quality.

Before you start, you need to:

  • register to use the Streaming Media Service by using the web form at http://upload.sms.cam.ac.uk/register
  • have a Raven account
  • have a web browser with a functioning Java Runtime Environment (if you are unsure, try it anyway and you will be informed if you haven't got one)
  • have video in digital video format or audio in one of the following formats - this needs to be the final form otherwise you'll have to upload it again (see Upload formats and media formats generated for further information about formats)
    • Video (aspect ration of 4:3 or 16:9)
      • DV stream
      • DV in an avi container
      • H.264 in either an mp4 or mov container
    • Audio
      • PCM audio in a wav container
      • PCM audio in an aiff container
  • have considered the most suitable formats for your audience and whether or not you want to archive your videos on DSpace as part of the process.
  • have a transcript of your presentation to make available for those who can't hear the commentary or audio file
