Access to DS-Filestore filespace from Macs outside the Managed Cluster Service

Important note: For technical reasons users of non-MCS Macs should not attempt to connect to the filestore using CIFS (SMB). The instructions below use AFP, which is currently the only permitted method.

These are the instructions for users who access the DS-Filestore filestore from a non-MCS Macintosh such as a personally owned Mac. Please note that it is not possible to use this method if you are connected to the network via Lapwing. The instructions were last updated in September 2011.

These instructions allow you to see your DS-Filestore filespace as just another item on your desktop. If all you want to do is to transfer files, then there are some alternatives.

Requirements: You will need to be running OS X; Classic MacOS cannot use this method. You also need to be network-connected within the cam.ac.uk domain with AppleShare support enabled over TCP/IP.

  • Select "Connect to Server..." from the Go menu
  • Under "Address" enter afp://home.ds.cam.ac.uk
  • NB Click on the + button if you want to add this server to your favourites
  • Click on "Connect"
  • Fill in your Desktop Services password when requested; if you tick 'Remember password in keychain' you will not be asked to enter your password again in the future

You will then need to navigate to the required filespace, depending on the first two letters of your CRSid.

Once you have mounted your home filespace you can then drag the folder to the right hand side of the Dock, or if you have 10.3 or later drag it to the lower portion of the sidebar, so that it can be easily accessed in the future.
