Selecting DS-Print printers

This page concerns selecting DS-Print printers and general printer information such as location and charging when you are working at a Managed Cluster machine, but some of the details will be the same for printing from your own machine configured with DS-Print PaperCut service to a DS-Print printer.

Institutions

Please navigate to your institution.

The sites denoted with '*' are part of the DS-Print common balance scheme. These are printers for which payment is by pre-paid credit. When any printer within the DS-Print common balance scheme is used payment is deducted from a single credit balance for the user.

On a Managed Cluster Windows PC

Your initial default printer when you login to a Managed Cluster PC will be that in the room where you are working.

To change this setting:

  • Click on Start and then on Printers and Faxes.
  • Right-click on the desired printer and click on "Set as default". This setting will persist till the end of the session.

Alternatively you can select a printer within most applications within the Print options window after you have selected the Print command (select the down-pointing arrow beside Name). This applies only till you close the current application.

In some applications you may also have to select the correct page size before printing.

To print duplex:

  • Choose File >Print from within an application and make sure the printer selected is the printer that you require.

To print double-sided:

  • Click on the Properties button (or the Layout tab) and select the required option in the Print on Both Sides section. Note the binding options and also that it may also be possible to print two or more pages on one side of an A4 sheet.
  • Click on OK when the required printer and options have been selected.

On a Managed Cluster Linux PC

Choosing a printer

Each PC running MCS Linux will have a local printer as its default printer. You can override this default, either for a single print job or for your entire session on that PC.

To change the default for the duration of your session:

  • either type lpoptions -d printer_name at the command line (e.g. lpoptions -d CS_PhxUA_LJ
  • or, from the Applications menu, select Utilities > Unsupported > Printing, single click on a printer name to select it, then right-click and select Set As Default.
  • Click on the close window icon to close the window.

Note: this will change your default printer on all MCS Linux systems. If you habitually use MCS Linux in different locations you may need to change your default printer each time you log in at a different location, or you may prefer to select your printer from each application.

The command lpstat -p gives a complete list of DS-Print printers.

To print a document

For graphical applications, select Print from the File menu and click Print. Some applications, in the Properties setting of the Print dialogue box, will allow you to set duplex printing. Some applications, for example the Open Office suite and the Evolution mail client, allow you to create a PDF file which you can save to disk.

lpr is the command line printing command. Use lpr --o sides=two-sided-long-edged to print duplex. The lpr command takes a printer option (-P) to pass the name of a printer for a specific job; this overrides any default printer set.

On a Managed Cluster Mac

When you login, your default printer will be the local printer; it is a good idea always to check where your printing is going.

To find out which printer is set, or to change your selected printer:

  • Select Print from the File menu and choose the printer you want from the pop-up list of printers that appears next to Printer in the window.
  • Select the appropriate radio button if you want duplex (two-sided) printing.
