Software on the Managed Cluster Service

The Managed Cluster Service provides PCs and Apple Macintoshes in various public rooms, and in computer rooms in certain Colleges and Departments. The software available differs according to the type of computer. Some specialist software is only available at particular sites or (rarely) on particular machines.

Note that there is normally no access to Desktop Service Windows or Macintosh applications from anywhere outside the Managed Clusters, except for the applications involved in the pilot DS-Apps service. You can however access Linux applications remotely, and also your DS files and DS printers.

Most Managed Cluster PCs run Windows XP. Windows 7 is being introduced into rooms from September 2011 onwards. PCs in certain rooms can run Linux as an alternative operating system. All MCS Macintoshes run Mac OS X 10.6.
