FAQ: How do I redirect mail from Hermes?
If you have e-mail addresses on more than one system, it is usually convenient to arrange for all of your mail to be forwarded to one system, so that you do not need to check more than one incoming mail box. You can often simplify things for yourself and your correspondents by using an @cam address, as described in leaflet IS29 @cam addresses and the online e-mail directory. Your correspondents do not then need to know which system you use for mail as they can find out your address, either from the online email directory if you have requested that your name is published, or from the Cambridge Lookup Directory if they are a local user and you have not suppressed your email address. However, even if you do this, mail might still arrive for you explicitly addressed to any system on which you have a mail address, so you may still need to redirect such mail to your preferred system.
Another reason to redirect your mail is if you are going away temporarily and will have a new account on a system at your destination. Note, however, that this is unlikely to be worthwhile for short visits, since you can normally connect from wherever you are to your normal mail system and read your mail. See leaflet IS13 Reading and sending email when away from Cambridge for more information.
To redirect your mail:
- Use a web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) to go to https://webmail.hermes.cam.ac.uk/ and login to Hermes.
- Click on the Manage icon at the top of the page.
- Click on the Redirect button and tick Enable Redirection.
- Specify the Redirect address: e.g.
me@somewherelse.ac.uk - Tick Save copy in this account if you want to keep a copy in your account. N.B. use this with care as your mail could build up and take your inbox over quota (this would eventually result in mail being returned to the sender).
- Click on the Apply button.
- Quit Hermes by clicking on the Logout icon at the top right of the web page.
- Click on the Okay icon.
- Check that the redirection is working by sending a message to yourself and making sure that it is forwarded to the correct destination.
To cancel a redirection:
- Login to Hermes via the web as above.
- Click on the Manage icon and then the Redirect button.
- Untick the boxe(s) and click on the Apply button.
- Quit Hermes as above.
Note that once a redirection is set up, it will be in effect until you cancel the redirection or the account is closed (at which point incoming mail is rejected).
See leaflet IS12 Hermes Email: Forwarding (redirection) and vacation messages for further information.
