@cam addresses and the online email directory

Filed under:
IS29

There are two online directory services in Cambridge:

  • Lookup, which provides information about people, institutions and groups and is made available for general use to any system within the University of Cambridge and to staff and students of the University;
  • the Cambridge online email directory, which is visible worldwide, and contains only @cam email addresses.

This information sheet is about the Cambridge online email directory (the @cam directory). This lists every user who has an @cam email address and has agreed to be included in the directory. Every University user can have an @cam address (all recent arrivals will have been given one automatically) and the mail sent to this address can be delivered to any email address of the user's choice. The default delivery address is the user's Hermes account. To opt in or out of the directory, or to select the delivery address for your @cam mail (doing this will automatically create an @cam address for you if necessary), go to the web page

https://jackdaw.cam.ac.uk/cammail/

This is a Raven-protected page; you will need to give your user name (CRSid) and Raven password. Once you have done that you will see a page that shows the CRSid and its affiliation. If the details are not yours you must select Cancel, otherwise select Continue... You will then see a page giving details of your @cam setup.

Changing your inclusion in the directory

From the section saying whether your address is currently included or not, select the button to change the status. This has instant effect, but is easy to reverse. You will be sent an email confirming what has been done.

Checking and changing where your @cam mail is delivered

You can send your @cam mail to any valid email address. Note that if you choose to send your @cam mail to a system outside the University then you may experience problems getting help if something goes wrong. In particular local staff are not able to offer the support that they can for mail delivered to a University system. To change your delivery arrangements:

  • Select the Change delivery arrangements button.
  • On the next page choose the delivery address from one of the two pull-down menus or, if necessary, type the complete address into the box, then select Continue. Once you have chosen Continue an email message is sent to your chosen address and the Confirm receipt of test mail page is displayed.
    Note that you can also choose to reject all messages sent to your @cam address. This has instant effect so think hard about whether this is wise - remember that many University and College staff will use your @cam address, particularly when they are first trying to contact you.
  • The confirmation email is from cammail-daemon@ucs.cam.ac.uk with the subject Testing proposed @cam target. The message contains a security code. If you still have the Confirm receipt of test mail page open, and you are happy with your new arrangement, enter this security code into the box and press Continue. If you decide not to change your delivery arrangements for your @cam mail then select the Cancel button. If you do not have the page still open the test message gives a URL (web page address) which you need to visit.
  • If you have chosen Continue you will see a final confirmation page. If you are happy with the information shown on that page select Continue then, from the next page, OK, and the new delivery arrangements will take effect. If you decide not to change your current delivery arrangement then select Cancel.
