Personal Web pages on the University Network

IS44

There are a number of of places on the University network where users can publish personal web pages, though some of them have only restricted facilties available. The publishing of web pages on the University network is covered by the Guidelines available on the web.

MCS

You can publish personal web pages from your DS-Filestore filespace. All users of the MCS can do this and no special registration is required. All staff and students of the University and Colleges may apply for an account - all new undergraduates are automatically pre-registered and sent their details. Web facilities available exclude the use of CGI scripts, ASP and PHP, and FrontPage extensions are not available. Personal web pages on the MCS will not be indexed by the site-wide search engine unless links to pages are found and will only be available during the time you are a student or are employed by the University.

See the leaflet M350: Personal Web pages on the MCS (pdf) for further details.

SRCF

The Student-run computing facility (SRCF) is a registered University Society that makes computing facilties available to students in the University (see http://www.srcf.ucam.org/). Facilties offered to members include the publishing of web pages, mailing lists with web-based administration, email @srcf.ucam.org, free website forwarding (though you don't need to be a member for this) and access to a Linux system so you can experiment to your heart's content. See the web pages for further information and how to join.

College and Department facilities

Many colleges and departments have web servers, some available for members. Some colleges have different web servers for undergraduate and graduate students. Information about facilties should be available through your local Computing Officer.

Own computer

Staff and students who have a computer permanently connected to the University network can potentially run a web server of their own. However there will be Departmental and College guidelines that will dictate whether this is permissible, and lay down the security requirements associated with running a web server. To find out what is permissible, contact your Departmental or College Computing Officer.
