Eudora

This page contains details about:-

Note. The University LDAP Directory is only available to mail clients on computers on the Cambridge network. If you are away from Cambridge and wish to use the University LDAP Directory then you will need to use the VPDN service so that your computer appears to be on the Cambridge network. Alternatively you can use Hermes Webmail.

Note. If you intend to use the Lapwing wireless service you will not be able to use the LDAP Directory when you are connected through Lapwing, since it does not allow insecure LDAP connections. While Eudora version 7 (Windows) appears to have settings for secure LDAP it does not work with directories such as the University LDAP Directory since the Eudora developers have made the assumption that a username/password is a prerequisite. Earlier versions of Eudora have no support for secure LDAP settings at all.

If you would like to check that Eudora is correctly set up for accessing Hermes, please see the correct page for your operating system:

Using the LDAP Directory to find an address

  • From the menu bar select
    • On Windows: Tools > Directory Services
    • On Macintosh: Window > Directory Services
  • In the Query field type the family name (or partial name) of the person you want to search for. Where possible use 4 or more characters as this will make the search more efficient. Then select
    • On Windows: Start
    • On Macs: Lookup
  • When the results of the search are displayed
    • If the search has returned just the right person then select the To button to create a new mail message to that person
    • If the search returns a list of names, scroll down until you highlight (single click) the correct name, then select the To button to create a new mail message to the selected person.
  • Repeat this procedure until you have added all the required recipients to your message, then close the Directory Services window.
