Outlook (2003, XP or 2000) and Outlook Express
Settings for two versions are described on this page
Note. The University LDAP Directory is only available to mail clients on computers on the Cambridge network. If you are away from Cambridge and wish to use the University LDAP Directory then you will need to use the VPDN service so that your computer appears to be on the Cambridge network. Alternatively you can use Hermes Webmail.

Outlook 2003 or Outlook XP
Note: If you are using Outlook XP then you are advised to make sure that you have Office XP Service Pack 3 applied, otherwise you may experience problems with Outlook not working reliably.
Configuring
- Select Tools > Email Accounts
- Select Add a new directory or addressbook then select Next
- Select Internet Directory Service (LDAP) then select Next
- For Server name type
ldap.lookup.cam.ac.ukthen select More Settings.... You will get a warning that you will have to restart Outlook before this new directory service will work, just select OK to proceed - The University LDAP server supports secure LDAP connections. Use
of secure connections is good practice to secure the personal data
provided by the service. On the Connection tab
check the Use Secure Sockets Layer box and change
the Port: number to
636.
Note: If you intend to use the Lapwing wireless service you must use this setting since Lapwing does not allow insecure LDAP connections. - Select the Search tab and for
Search Base type
ou=people,o=University of Cambridge,dc=cam,dc=ac,dc=uk(be sure to type it exactly as it appears on this page) then select OK to save your changes - Select Next then Finish to end the wizard.
Remember that you will need to restart Outlook before you can use the new LDAP entry.
Using the LDAP Directory to find an address with Outlook 2003 or Outlook XP
- Open a new message
- Select To:
- Check that Show Names From is set to
ldap.lookup.cam.ac.uk - Select Advanced > Find
- Type the name (or part of the name) of the person you want to search for into the correct field. Where possible use 4 or more characters as this will make the search more efficient.
- Under Substring Matching select the Contains button then select OK
- If the search returns just the right person the entry will be highlighted. If the search returns a list of names, scroll down until you can highlight (single click) the correct name. Select To: to add the name and address to your message
- Repeat this procedure until you have added all the required recipients to your message.
Note: If you plan to use an address frequently you may want to add it to your personal address book. To do this, right click on the person you want to add and select Add to Personal Address Book

Outlook 2000 or Outlook Express 6
Configuring
- Select Tools > Accounts
- Select Add > Directory Service
- For Internet Directory (LDAP) server type
ldap.lookup.cam.ac.ukthen select Next - Check Yes in reply to the Do you want to check addresses using this directory service? then select Next
- Select OK or Finish
- Now select the
ldap.lookup.cam.ac.ukentry in the Accounts list and select Properties - In the first box enter a suitable name,
e.g.
University directoryto make it easy to recognize - Select the Advanced tab
- The University LDAP server supports secure LDAP connections. Use

and check that the number by Directory Service (LDAP) has
changed to
636.

Using the LDAP Directory to find an address with Outlook 2000 or Outlook Express 6
- Open a new message
- Select To:
- Select Find
- In the Look in drop down menu select the name
you have called your directory entry, e.g.
University Directory - In the Name field type the name (or part of the name) of the person you want to search for. It is better to use the family name and, where possible, use 4 or more characters as this will make the search more efficient.
- Select Find Now
- If the search returns just the right person the entry will be highlighted. If the search returns a list of names, scroll down until you can highlight (single click) the correct name. Select To: then to add the name and address to your message
- Repeat the Find procedure until you have added all the required recipients to your message, then select OK in the Select Names window.
Note: If you plan to use an address frequently select Add to Address Book as well.
