Alpine or Pine

If you run Alpine or Pine on Hermes, or the PWF, then you do not need to change any settings as they are already set up for you.

The Windows versions have LDAP support in. If you are using Alpine or Pine on Unix (including Linux) it may depend on whether you are using the version that came with your Operating System distribution or whether you have compiled your own copy. If you cannot see the Directory line in the Setup screen (see below) then you will need need to compile the program with LDAP support.

Note. The University LDAP Directory is only available to mail clients on computers on the Cambridge network. If you are away from Cambridge and wish to use the University LDAP Directory then you will need to use the VPDN service so that your computer appears to be on the Cambridge network. Alternatively you can use Hermes Webmail.

Note. If you use Pine and intend to use the Lapwing wireless service you will not be able to use the LDAP Directory when you are connected through Lapwing, since it does not allow insecure LDAP connections and Pine does not support secure LDAP connections.

If you would like to check that Alpine or Pine is correctly set up for accessing Hermes, please see the page on configuring Alpine or Pine for Hermes
