Entourage (and Outlook on Macs)
This describes the settings in Entourage 2004 used as an IMAP client. Other versions may differ slightly.
If you would also like to be able to look up Cambridge email addresses automatically, please see the page on configuring Entourage to use the University LDAP Directory. Do this after you have set up Entourage to access Hermes.
Server settings
- From the top menu choose Entourage->Account Settings
- Highlight Mail and then select New (if you are setting up an account) or your account name. When the Account Setup Assistant starts check that your email address is entered correctly then select Configure my account manually (if you are setting up a new account you may get the New Accounts box, from which you should select IMAP as the Account type: and then select OK)
- In the Edit Account window check that the Account Settings tab is highlighted
- Under Receiving mail set IMAP Server to
imap.hermes.cam.ac.uk(the Account ID should be your CRSid) - Select the Click here for advanced receiving
options button then
- tick This IMAP service requires a secure connection (SSL)
- The port number to the right of Override default IMAP Port should change from 143 to 993. If it does not, tick the box to the left of this option and type 993 in the box to the right
- Select the close box in the upper left corner or press the Enter key to return to the main window
- Under Sending mail set the SMTP Server
to
smtp.hermes.cam.ac.uk - select the Click here for advanced sending options

- Tick Override default SMTP port and then change the port number from 25 to 587 (note that if you are using an older version of Entourage enter 465 instead of 587)
- Tick SMTP server requires authentication and select the Use same settings as receiving mail server button
- Select the close box in the upper left corner or press the Enter key to return to the main window
- Select OK
Once you have made a successful IMAP connection to Hermes you will be able to set your Sent Mail folder to be on Hermes. This is done from the Advanced tab on the Edit Account window.
POP is available, but note that POP will, by default, download your
email from Hermes to the computer you are using. This means that you
will only be able to access your messages from that one computer, and
Hermes webmail will not be useful to you. If your computer breaks or is
stolen you will lose your messages. However, if you must use POP, then
set POP3 as the account type and use
pop.hermes.cam.ac.uk as the server name.
Mail folder settings
~/mail used to
be needed to define the path to mail folders on Hermes, but is now obsolete
and should be removed from the settings.
Select Entourage->Account Settings. Select your account then Edit. Select the Options tab. Check that there is nothing in the box by Root folder path. If there is, remove it. Select OK to confirm the changes.
