Eudora for Windows
This describes the settings in Eudora for Windows used as an IMAP client. Eudora is normally used as a POP client and indeed many versions function better used that way. However note that POP will, by default, download your email from Hermes to the computer you are using. This means that you will only be able to access your messages from that one computer, and Hermes webmail will not be useful to you. If your computer breaks or is stolen you will lose your messages.
If you would also like to be able to look up Cambridge email addresses automatically, please see the page on configuring Eudora to use the University LDAP Directory. Do this after you have set up Eudora to access Hermes.
NOTES:
- If you are using the 'sponsored mode' version of Eudora (the one which used to display advertisements) you need to see the Qualcomm FAQ about versions. (January 2008)
- Secure settings are only available in Eudora version 5.1 and above. If your version of Eudora is older than 5.1, you will need to upgrade to a more recent version.
The settings are found under Tools->Options.
Server settings
Once you have the settings panel displayed, select Getting started and set the following:
- Mail Server (incoming) to
imap.hermes.cam.ac.uk - SMTP Server (outgoing) to
smtp.hermes.cam.ac.uk
also check the Allow authentication box.
Check under Incoming Mail that your Server
configuration is set to IMAP.
If you wish to use Eudora as a POP client, then check that your
Server configuration is set to POP
and replace imap with pop in the settings.
Select Checking Mail and, from the pulldown menu under Secure sockets when receiving, select Required, STARTTLS.
Select Sending Mail and, from the pulldown menu under Secure Sockets for Sending:
- Eudora 7 and above - select Required (TLS) and tick the Use submission port (587) box.
- Earlier versions - select Required, Alternate Port.
The Secure Sockets settings prevent your password passing in plain text across the network and being snooped.
Select OK to confirm the changes.
Mail folder settings
~/mail used to be needed to define the path to mail folders on
Hermes for IMAP mail clients, but is now obsolete and should be removed
from the settings (if you use POP this will not affect you as your mail
folders are saved on your local system).
From the settings panel select Incoming Mail and check that nothing is entered in the box under IMAP Mailbox Location Prefix. If there is, remove it. Select OK to confirm changes.
Certificates
Hermes uses a certificate supplied by a company called Globalsign. If you are using a version of Eudora below 6.2 you will need to explicitly add the root certificate (GTE CyberTrust) that the rest of the Globalsign certificate chain hangs off.
One way of doing this is:-
- Do a File -> Check Mail.
- You should get a pop-up box saying
The server's SSL certificate is rejectedand askingif you want to trust it in future sessions. TheIssuer:should startC=US, O=GTE Corporation, OU=GTE CyberTrust Solutions Inc.,(you will probably not be able to see the whole of the line). - Select Yes, which puts the certificate into your trusted list, then check your mail again.
If you would like to check the whole certificate
- Choose Tools -> Personalities, which will open a small panel at the left side of the Eudora window
- Right-click on the <Dominant> entry and choose Properties (Eudora nees to be running in "Sponsored" mode to do this - you can change to this mode via the menu option Help -> Payment & Registration)
- Click on Incoming Mail then Last SSL Info
- The SSL Connection Information Manager window should appear. Select Certificate Information Manager at the bottom of the window.
- You should see a certificate name starting
US, GTE Corporation, GTE "CyberTrust Solutions Inc."in the Server Certificates and User Trusted Certificates entries. - If you click on the
+by the entry in the Server Certificates section you can see the chain of certificates, ending in the one for Hermes
