Email

Seamonkey Mail, Mozilla Mail, Netscape Mail

If you would also like to be able to look up Cambridge email addresses automatically, please see the page on configuring Thunderbird (or Seamonkey Mail, Mozilla Mail, Netscape Mail) to use the University LDAP Directory. Do this after you have set up access to Hermes.

Server settings

Select Mail and Newsgroups (under Window then, depending on version, either View settings for this account or Edit->Mail and Newsgroups Account Settings).

For incoming mail

Under your account (you may need to first select the arrow to see the options), select Server settings.

If your Server Type is IMAP Mail Server set:-

  • Server Name: to imap.hermes.cam.ac.uk
  • User Name: to Your CRSid (e.g. spqr9)

POP is available, but note that POP will, by default, download your email from Hermes to the computer you are using. This means that you will only be able to access your messages from that one computer, and Hermes webmail will not be useful to you. If your computer breaks or is stolen you will lose your messages. However, if you must use POP then, when you create your account, set your Server Type to POP Mail Server and use pop.hermes.cam.ac.uk in the Server Name setting. Remember to put your CRSid in the User Name setting.

For Security Settings, depending on version:-

  • Either
    • Set Connection security to STARTTLS
    Or
    • Check the Use secure connection (SSL) box.

This setting prevents your password passing in plain text across the network and being snooped.

If there is a setting named Use secure authentication make sure this is not ticked. This is a different authentication system and is not used by Hermes. If you have this selected you will not be able to connect to Hermes.

For outgoing mail

Select Outgoing Server (SMTP) then select Edit... if you have existing Hermes settings or Add... if you are configuring a new account).

Set the server name to smtp.hermes.cam.ac.uk. In the Port box enter 587. Make sure your CRSid (e.g. spqr9) appears in the User Name field.

Depending on the version of the program you are using, either:-

  • check the STARTTLS (or TLS) option under Use secure connection or Connection security
  • or, if the option is Use secure connection (SSL), select Always.

Select OK to confirm the changes.

Mail folder settings

~/mail used to be needed to define the path to mail folders on Hermes for IMAP mail clients, but is now obsolete and should be removed from the settings (if you use POP this will not affect you as your mail folders are saved on your local system).

Select Mail and Newsgroups (under Window then Edit->Mail and Newsgroups Account Settings).

Under your account (you may need to first select the arrow to see the options), select Server settings.

  • Select Advanced... and then (if necessary) the IMAP tab
  • Make sure there is nothing entered in the entry for IMAP server directory - if there is remove it
  • Check the Allow server to override these namespaces box at the bottom of the page
  • Select OK to confirm changes and close the panel and then OK to close the Account settings panel
