Mulberry

This describes the settings in Mulberry version 4.0.x, used as an IMAP client. Other versions may differ slightly.

If you would also like to be able to look up Cambridge email addresses automatically, please see the page on configuring Mulberry to use the University LDAP Directory. Do this after you have set up Mulberry to access Hermes.

Server Settings

You need to configure Mulberry with the secure settings described on this page.

The current, free, version is available for download from the developer's website. If you are using a version of Mulberry before 4.0.x, and do not already have the SSL plugin needed for your version, then you will either need to upgrade to or change to another mail program.

If you are using the Windows or Unix versions the settings are found under File ->Preferences. If you are using a Mac, they are under Mulberry->Preferences.

Once you have the Preferences panel displayed, select the simple button and set the following

  • Mail server: to imap.hermes.cam.ac.uk
  • Server type: to IMAP
  • SMTP server: to smtp.hermes.cam.ac.uk:587

Select the advanced button and then the Accounts tab.

Firstly make sure that you have the IMAP account selected from the pull-down menu. If you have the facility for secure connections you will see a pull-down menu named Secure: at the bottom of the Authenticate tab. Select STARTTLS - TLSv1.

Now select SMTP in the Accounts tab. For Method select Plain Text from the pull-down menu and enter your CRSid (e.g. spqr9) in the User ID field. Check that the Server setting is smtp.hermes.cam.ac.uk:587. Select STARTTLS - TLSv1 from the pull-down menu for Authenticate. Tick the Match User ID and Password box at the bottom of the tab.

Setting STARTTLS prevents your password passing in plain text across the network and being snooped.

Select OK to confirm the changes.

Mail folder settings

~/mail used to be needed to define the path to mail folders on Hermes for IMAP mail clients, but is now obsolete and should be removed from the settings (if you use POP this will not affect you as your mail folders are saved on your local system).

  • Select your INBOX and then, from the menus select Mailbox->Display Hierarchy->Reset All.
  • Check On by the server-suggested entry (<<Entire Hierarchy>>).
  • Check Automatically Add Server Suggestions in Future.
  • Delete ~/mail/ if it appears in the Places to Search for Mailboxes on the Server entry.
  • Select OK to make the changes.

If you have settings that automatically copy messages you send into a mailbox, and/or move read mail into a mailbox when you quit Mulberry then you will need to reselect these mailboxes. If you are using the Windows or Unix versions the settings are found under File ->Preferences. If you are using a Mac, they are under Mulberry->Preferences.

Once you have the Preferences panel displayed, select the simple button and if you have a setting for Copy Outgoing Messages reselect your chosen mailbox from the pulldown list. The format of the mailbox name will change slightly.

Select the advanced button and then the Mailboxes tab. If you have a setting for Move Read Messages in INBOX reselect your chosen mailbox from the pulldown list. Again, the format of the mailbox name will change slightly.

From the Accounts tab select the Options tab. Make sure the Automatic Hierarchy List box is checked.

Finally select OK to save your changes.
