Mobile Devices
Mobile devices: wireless and email advice
The Computing Service supports mobile devices, such as the Blackberry, iPhone, iPod touch or Pocket PC, on a best-efforts basis. Whilst it is not possible to document and support every variation of every mobile device on the market, we have some generic information on email configurations and on wireless access, appropriate to a range of devices, and also specific instructions for some popular models.
A note on browsers
On some phones the built-in browser, particularly if it is designed for use on WAP sites, will give some odd results, for example when used with Hermes Webmail. We have received a user-recommendation for using Opera Mini (free download) in these cases. Opera Mini is Java based and should work on any mobile device that supports Java.
Generic configuration notes
If your device is not in the list you may find the following pages help you configure it.
- Settings for email with Hermes
- Settings for the eduroam wireless network
Note that it is not possible to connect to Lapwing or eduroam using most Amazon Kindles. We have been told that the android eduroam settings work on a Kindle Fire.
Converting a certificate for use on mobile devices
JANET(UK) has signed up to a new TERENA contract for server certificates. This means that the Comodo AddTrust External CA Root certificate is needed for eduroam, as well as other services (e.g. Hermes). Some phones (including Nokia and Sony Ericsson) do not have this certificate in their list of Certification Authorities. We have provided instructions for converting the root CA for use on mobile devices.
