VirusScan Security DVD
This page details the VirusScan DVDs & CD, what you can expect it to do, and its contents.
Overview
The VirusScan and Security DVDs & CD are the primary means of distributing VirusScan to new students at the start of the academic year. Currently most of the Colleges give a copy of this (some produce their own version) to every new student. It is however for use by any student or member of staff assoicated with the University.
The application menu on these is written in Visual Basic 6 and comes with an autorun .ini file to enable autorun functionality.
Three Versions
As of August 2011 we have provided three different versions; an XP Only CD (for older systems with no DVD drive) and two for current versions (one for Windows 7, and one for XP and Vista).
The change was made due to space limitations on the CD and DVDs. The XP Only CD has SP2 on it.
Sections
The menu.exe program displays a form which has two sections. The first is a general section visible in all versions of Windows. The second is an OS specific section. The menu program when it runs will detect the Windows version and present a subframe of information specific to that version. All versions contain all the OS frames, users are directed to the correct version if they use the wrong one for their OS. e.g. if a Vista user puts the Windows 7 DVD in their system, text is displayed directing them to the correct DVD.
Date/Time Stamps in Registry
There are a number of date/time stamps recorded in the Registry when menu.exe is run and at other stages when buttons are clicked.
When menu.exe is run
- HKCU\SOFTWARE\UCS\ AVSecurityCD
- FirstRun
- LastRun
- Version - Refering to DVD or version (currently 3.0 for Windows 7)
Clicking the button to install Virusscan will add;
- VscanInstalled
Clicking the button to install the SDAT will add;
- SdatInstalled
Other relevant buttons leave some of the following keys (depending on the version, keys will vary);
- Win7ServicePack
- VistaServicePack
- XPServicepack
- XPUpdates
- 2KServicePack
- 2kUpdates
- It should be noted that the 64bit version of XP has the same service pack level as 2003 server, so only SP2 is available.
Patches
Currently we also make available the latest Service Pack and Critical System patches for Windows (not server versions). These are included on the discs immediately after their release. No patches are provided for Internet Explorer or Microsoft Office etc. Note: due to Microsoft not actually allowing the re-distribution of patches in this way we try not to advertise this too widely.
Info Buttons
Most of the buttons displayed also have an Info button adjacent to them which will display a relevant html help file for the action or task button

If you come across any examples of mis-detection please report them to windows-support@ucs.cam.ac.uk. It will also detect if the system is 32 or 64 bit and install the correct service pack and patches. This effect is transparent to the user.
