Conferencing, Collaboration & improved Communications ... from your Desktop

This 12-month proof-of-concept project, which began in February 2010, is a collaborative effort to investigate, test and potentially establish a Web-based conferencing and collaboration system, as well as procedures which will help ensure a sustainable service for the University community.  Remote collaboration systems, such as Web-based conferencing, are increasingly adopted as a preferred means to save time, expense, and travel - and its associated negative environmental impact - as well as a means to provide improved productivity, community support and development, especially for teams with widely-dispersed members, such as is common with University projects.

The ability to collaborate easily, inexpensively and more frequently, wherever members of a team are based, can foster improved working environments and encourage team development.  Such collaboration can also assist in bridging distances within and beyond the University.

Examples of the desktop conferencing, collaboration and communication systems being evaluating include, e.g. Webex, GoToMeeting, Dimdim, Adobe Connect, among others.  While such systems can improve our overall productivity and carbon footprint - saving time, expense and travel - they are also practical and enjoyable additions to our ICT tools and skills.

Initially involving staff of the University, the distributed team of testers are using and helping to evaluate the potential solutions to enable us to:

  • Meet, teach, discuss, interview & present - across the Internet
  • Share essential documents - view only or work interactively
  • Reduce unnecessary travel and associated costs
  • ... all this and more, from your desktop or laptop
