Computer provision for examinations with adjustments

UIS supports the Board of Examinations in the computer provision for
examinations with adjustments through the provision of facilities, a secure
Windows 7 Desktop environment and technical support. The DS-Exams service
is provided for students taking examinations with adjustments (i.e. those
students authorised by the Board of Examinations to use a computer rather
than writing their answers by hand).

The DS-Exams service consists of three main components:

  1. Dedicated classroom facilities providing up to 80 seats within the Titan Teaching Rooms and 25 seats in Phoenix Training Room 1 on the New Museums Site (City Centre)
  2. Delivery of examinations with adjustments via an in-house developed UIS examinations application. The application incorporates a Word 2013 text editor, an individual word 2013 document template for each candidate with any special requirements (fonts, visibility aids, colours), and no internet access. The examinations system uses locked down user examination profiles that automatically save all document changes on a two-minute schedule to dedicated centralised examination file servers.
  3. An Invigilator administration portal, which uses delegated permissions for accessing various components of the DS-Exams service.

During the main examination period in 2016, from mid-May to mid-June, 874
examinations were sat by 208 students sitting 437 different examination
papers using the DS-Exams service, with UIS staff providing support from
Monday to Friday, on weekends and on Bank Holidays.
