An introduction to Unix Support

Unix Support is a group of four people. We provide support for Unix system administrators within the University and its related institutions in the form of advice and help (by e-mail or visit). We also provide certain network services, courses, online documentation and vendor contact.

System Administrators should contact their institutional computer support in the first instance. If they don't exist, or are unwilling or unable to help then please contact us by email if at all possible.

  • Email for Unix questions: unix-support@ucs.cam.ac.uk
  • Email for MCS Linux questions: service-desk@ucs.cam.ac.uk
  • Postal address: Unix Support, University Computing Service, New Museums Site, Pembroke Street, Cambridge. CB2 3QH
  • Telephone: +44 (0)1223 334728 (or 34728 on the University exchange) Please use e-mail if at all possible.

If your machine has crashed, your data has gone missing and your dumps are corrupted, don't panic; you aren't alone. We have lists of the great system administration and technical support horror stories.
