Configuring eduroam for Intel PROSet/Wireless on Windows
These instructions are for configuring wireless access to eduroam on Windows XP using the Intel PROSet/Wireless WiFi Connection Utility. This utility is often supplied with laptops using Intel wireless network adapters, common on Centrino laptops, and overrides the built-in Windows connection method (documented separately).
If you follow the Windows instructions for XP and receive a message that 'Windows cannot configure this wireless connection', it may be that you have the Intel utility installed. You can either disable the Intel utility or follow these instructions. We recommend following the Intel-specific instructions here as the process is simpler and offers more control.
Configuration steps
Make sure that you have your credentials (eduroam identifier and Network access token (username and password)) from the UCS Tokens service.
NOTE: Before you begin the steps below, you must be connected to the network fully (on Lapwing/Raven or an office or home connection) and browse to the UCS Tokens service page using Internet Explorer 6 or above (if you use a third-party browser such as Firefox or Google Chrome, this will not work). This causes your browser your to automatically retrieve some information required in the certificate authority step below.
- Computers using the Intel PROSet/Wireless utility usually have a wireless signal strength icon in the System Tray in the bottom right of the of the screen, next to the clock (the colour and exact design of the icon will vary according to whether the computer is already connected to a wireless network or not):

- Double-click on the wireless icon and the Intel PROSet/Wireless WiFi Connection Utility window should open:

- Click on the Profiles... button to open the Profiles dialog box, which will show the wireless networks the computer is configured to connect to:

- Click on Add... to open the Create WiFi Profile dialog box. Complete the settings in this page as follows:-
- In the Profile Name box, type eduroam.
- In the WiFi Network Name (SSID) box, also type eduroam (note the lower-case 'e').

- Once this is complete, DO NOT 'OK' the dialog box, but select the Next >> button to move to the PEAP User settings page. Complete the settings in this page as follows:-
- Select the Enterprise Security radio button.
- From the Network Authentication drop-down list which appears, select WPA2 - Enterprise.
- From the Data Encryption drop-down list, select AES - CCMP.
- Complete the User Credentials boxes using the details from the UCS Tokens service:
- Your User Name will be the eduroam identifier (typically your CRSid followed by @cam.ac.uk).
- The Domain box must be left empty.
- Your Password (and the Confirm Password box) will be the Network access token.
- In the Roaming Identity box, enter @cam.ac.uk (without anything before the @ sign).

- Again, DO NOT 'OK' the dialog box, but select the Next >> button to move to the PEAP Server settings page of the dialog box. Complete the settings in this page as follows:-
- Tick the Specify Server or Certificate Name checkbox.
- In the Server or Certificate Name box, enter network.tokens.csx.cam.ac.uk.
- Select the Server name must match the specified entry exactly radio button.

- Now you can OK the Create WiFi Profile dialog box, returning to the Profiles dialog box, showing the new profile: You can prioritise connecting to eduroam over other wireless networks (for example, preferring it to Lapwing) if more than one is available at any time, by selecting it in the list and pressing the Up (arrow) button repeatedly, giving the result shown below.

- Select Close to close the Profiles dialog box and return to the main Intel PROSet/Wireless WiFi Connection Utility window.
- After a few seconds, you should be automatically connected to eduroam and a box will appear in the bottom right of the screen confirming this:

- If this does not happen, it is probably because you are already connected to another network; you can force a switch to eduroam by selecting it from the list and selecting Connect underneath:

- If everything is correct, you can close the connection utility window.
All the settings made above are stored in your computer and should not need re-entering each time you connect. When the eduroam network is in range, the message should automatically appear, informing you you have connected successfully.
