Wireless networking
eduroam for visitors to Cambridge
The University Computing Service offers eduroam (JANET Roaming Service) at Tier 2, supporting WPA-TKIP and WPA2-AES with public IP addresses and no IPv6 support and the following blocked ports on a stateful firewall:
| outbound | |
|---|---|
| TCP: | 25, 135, 137-139, 445, 1433, 1434 |
| UDP: | 135, 137-139, 445 |
| inbound | |
| all blocked except for PING | |
The firewall is aware of FTP and PPTP and should allow the return parts of these protocols automatically.
The devolved nature of the University means that each department and college makes the decision whether or not to offer wireless networking. A list of institutions with Computing Service provided wireless access points is available. Note that not all have eduroam access available at present.
Visitors need to make sure that they arrive with their wireless configuration set up (or that they can do so by contacting their home institution). Note that you are bound by your home organisation's AUP, the JANET AUP and ours, and that breach of AUP could result in disciplinary procedures at your home site.
Note that it is not possible to connect eduroam using most Amazon Kindles. We have been told that the android eduroam settings work on a Kindle Fire.
